Despite the term, "trouser suit" which had been used in Britain during the First World War, with reference to women working in heavy industry, the pantsuit was introduced in the 1920s, when a small number of women adopted a masculine style, including pantsuits, hats, canes and monocles.
With time, pant suits for women became increasingly widespread in the 1960s
with designers such as Foale and Tuffin in London and Luba Marks in the United States spearheading the trend shortly followed by Yves Saint-Laurent’s Le Smoking in 1966 an evening pantsuit for women that mimicked a man's tuxedo.
A century after women could be arrested for wearing pants, the two-piece pant suit still reflects the aspirations of women seeking to defy gender norms and incites the ire of those intent on keeping us in our place.
